Led by Unit 3A being named the top Medical-Surgical unit in the company, all six Med-Surg units at Rapides Regional Medical Center have been honored as recipients of HCA’s 2016 Unit of Distinction award.
In 2016, 477 HCA Med-Surg units participated in the program, and just 44 were honored as Units of Distinction – 21 in the top 5 percent and 23 in the top 10 percent. RRMC is the only facility to have all of its Med-Surg units place within the top 10 percent.
“This is extraordinary and proves what we’ve always known,” said Barbara Griffin, MSN, RN, NE-BC, Chief Nursing Officer. “These awards are a testament to the quality of care patients receive at Rapides Regional Medical Center. Everyone who provides care for our patients are part of these awards.”
Receiving recognition in the top 5 percent were:
- 3A, Maria Whittington, unit manager
- 4A, Maribel James, unit manager
- 3 South, Debbie Bullock, unit manager.
Receiving recognition in the top 10 percent were:
- 6A, Joan Dauzat, unit manager
- 4 South, Dominque Boney, unit manager
- 7A, David Rachal, unit manager.
The “Unit of Distinction” designation is achieved through measurable, outstanding performance in nursing leadership, professional practice and operations and outcomes. Using 21 different criteria, units were scored to determine which would receive the 2016 honor.
“The Unit of Distinction Award recognizes and celebrates excellence in medical-surgical nursing and acknowledges further that it takes a high-performing team of nurses, demonstrating a high level of commitment, to achieve these results,” said Jane D. Englebright, PhD, RN, CENP, FAAN, HCA Chief Nurse Executive and Senior Vice President.
“I couldn’t be more proud,” said Jason Cobb, RRMC Chief Executive Officer. “We all know our patients receive the best care possible, and this proves that.”
Launched in 2014, the Unit of Distinction Awards are an essential component of HCA’s multifaceted Excellence in Nursing plan. This is the second year for the Unit of Distinction Awards. The company supports each nurse’s professional dedication with a solid foundation of encouragement and an involved environment in order to help them fulfill their potential and further their careers.
