Orthopedic Surgeon Timmothy Randell, M.D., has performed the first wireless, handheld robotic total knee replacement in the state of Louisiana.
Dr. Randell’s use of the THINK Surgical TMINI Miniature Robotic System last week at Rapides Regional Medical Center was the first time the system has been used in Louisiana. The robot is wireless and handheld, and uses CT scans of the knee to aid orthopedic surgeons when performing total knee replacements.
“The TMINI robotic system increases accuracy and precision for placement of the new knee,” said Dr. Randell. “I know where the placement will be before I make a cut to the bone.”
Using CT scans of the patient’s knee, a unique and detailed 3D model is created. For precision, the 3D model is then used by the TMINI System to provide a robotically-assisted total knee procedure unique to the patient’s knee, and operating under complete control of the surgeon. This state-of-the-art technology is tailored to support the surgeon at every stage, helping guide the surgeon in accurate placement of bone pins and cutting guides.
The other benefit for patients is the surgeon is not limited to the robot manufacturer’s implants. The surgeon is able to choose an implant based on the patient’s unique needs.
