If someone offered you a more accurate way to be screened for cancer, you’d take it, right? Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital offers women exactly that with the new Genius 3D Mammography exam.

“This 3D mammography system gives us a series of detailed breast images,” said Kevin Shows, BSRT-N, Director of Radiology and Radiation Oncology Services. “This allows doctors to better evaluate the breasts layer by layer, resulting in better accuracy and improved detection.”

The Genius 3D Mammography system is the only mammogram proven to:

  • Detect cancers 15 months earlier
  • Reduce unnecessary testing (repeated mammograms) by up to 40 percent
  • Find 41 percent more invasive cancers than conventional mammography alone

“Studies show that the Genius 3D Mammography exam has greater accuracy than 2D mammography for women across a variety of ages and breast densities,” Shows said. “Women who know they have dense breasts, or those who have previously been called back for additional mammograms would certainly benefit from this technology.”

The process for a 3D mammogram is the same as it is for a traditional mammogram. The technologist will position you, compress your breast and take images from different angles. There’s no additional compression needed – and it only takes a few extra seconds. Plus, the 3D mammogram delivers a low dose of radiation, comparable to a two-dimensional mammogram.

“With 3D Mammography, fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by tissue above or below,” Shows said.

Since this is a new technology, 3D mammography may carry an additional copay or out-of-pocket expense depending on your insurance provider. If you choose not to have a 3D mammogram, 2D mammography is available.
